The nation's Semeru volcano, the tallest summit on Java island, has erupted, covering multiple communities with falling ash, leading to evacuations and leading authorities to raise the warning to the highest level.
The volcano in East Java province unleashed blistering plumes of hot ash and a mixture of rock, lava and gas that moved up to 4 miles down its slopes several times from midday to evening, while a dense plume of fiery clouds rose 2km into the sky, as stated by the nation's geological authority.
The eruptions that unfolded throughout the day forced authorities to increase the volcanoâs alert level on two occasions, from the level three to the highest, the agency reported. No deaths or injuries have been reported.
Over three hundred residents in the three communities most endangered in the area of Lumajang region were evacuated to official safe havens, according to a spokesperson for the national emergency management body.
He said that heightened volcanic movements of the mountain on the afternoon of Wednesday led authorities to widen the hazard area to 8km from the summit. People were advised to keep away from an area along the Besuk Kobokan River, which is the route of the molten rock stream, as scorching gases moved down Semeruâs slopes.
Footage on online platforms displayed a dense cloud of ash moving through a wooded ravine to a waterway beneath a bridge. Residents, some with faces covered with volcanic dust and rain, escaped to temporary shelters or departed for other safe areas.
Local media indicated that emergency teams were struggling to save about 178 individuals stranded on the 3,676-metre peak at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The group included 137 hikers, 15 porters, seven escorts and six travel representatives, according to an official with the protected area.
âThey remain secure at the Ranu Kumbolo station,â a spokesperson said in a recorded message. He noted the post was located 2.8 miles from the crater on the north side of the mountain, which is not in the path of the hot cloud flow that was observed moving to the south-southeast. Inclement conditions and precipitation required the group to remain overnight there, he explained.
The volcano, also called Great Mountain, has burst many occasions in the past 200 years. However, as is the situation with many of the 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, tens of thousands of people still to live on its fertile slopes.
The mountain's last major eruption was in late 2021, when 51 individuals were lost their lives and hundreds more were burned and settlements were submerged in layers of mud. The eruption led to the evacuation of more than 10,000 residents from their homes.
