The Denver Nuggets star secured the league's Most Valuable Player award in three of the past four years.

Three-time NBA MVP Jokic sustained a "devastating" knee injury when the Denver Nuggets were defeated by a score of 147-123 at the Heat.

The Serbian center injured himself towards the end of the second quarter during an unintentional contact with fellow Nugget Spencer Jones.

The other player landed on the footwear of Jokic, who promptly fell to the ground clutching his leg.

The veteran player, who is leading the league this season in boards and assists, recorded 21 points and eight dimes in the game prior to sustaining the setback.

The player will undergo an scan on the following day to determine the seriousness of the injury.

"Right away, Jokic understood there was a problem," said Denver head coach David Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Whoever that is injured, that's tough to see, particularly a player as talented as Jokic. More information will come tomorrow."

"We'll move on together. Of course, at this moment, I'm focused primarily about him personally and the letdown of facing an event like that."
