When an teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a key Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final place.

At 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," said the player after his debut.

"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to represent either country at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive full international.

He has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Diaz opted to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team chase future success.

Following his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.
