The original creators behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction for a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who co-founded the business with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he will independently develop the controversial product as part of a personal collection highlighting issues the company has been barred from addressing publicly.
This latest development deepens the ongoing disagreement between the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the British consumer goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain that Unilever along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "honouring its social mission".
Mr. Cohen stated via social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions regarding naming options and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business over to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
The new product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that originally created several years back to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Mr. Cohen revealed how he will develop other frozen dessert varieties that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, following many years with the organization, mentioning concerns that its independence had been undermined after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen commented how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that the company can actualise the social mission, the principles that it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
