The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her American tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
