The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the popular sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.
“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it from others, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
So if the writers aren’t being guided by public opinion, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We have some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to throw out a decent plan for a superior concept. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why mess with the classics?
“I want Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
