The gravest possible consequences of the climate crisis for the UK have been detailed by scientists, ranging from a searing 4C jump in temperatures to a 2-metre rise in sea level. Another scenario foresees a decline of 6C in temperature following the failure of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact farming and energy demand.

Credible Outcomes, Not Predictions

These impacts, some of which are linked to climate tipping points, are seen as improbable but possible. The scientists explained that these models plugged a hole in risk assessment that had left the UK not ready for worst-case results.

"The severe weather events we have detailed aren’t predictions, but they are plausible," said the professor who led the study. "The nation has been planning without the methods to plan for extreme possibilities. We've now provided planners what they need to get ready for future conditions they wish to avoid, but must not overlook."

A Spectrum of Severe Conditions Scenarios

Another collection of worst-case scenarios maps the potential extent of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These show that temperatures could rocket in certain periods by up to 6C higher than the norm, while precipitation could be triple typical amounts.

The likelihood of the extreme scenarios occurring remains uncertain due to uncertainty about what measures will be implemented to combat global heating and how the planet's climate will respond. This analysis was compared to security threat evaluations or resilience checks for financial systems.

• Four-Degree Warming: Worldwide averages exceeding 4C by 2100 could transpire if emissions cuts breaks down or if strong feedback loops including the Amazon rainforest becoming a net carbon source emit its vast reserves of carbon. This would result in severe and lengthy heat domes and droughts hitting the UK in summer.
• Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is weakening and showing signs of collapse due to climate change. A full shutdown beginning in 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK.
