Putin Assures Steady Crude Oil Deliveries to India in Defiance of Washington Pressure

During a clear signal to the West, Leader Vladimir Putin has told PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to provide “uninterrupted” supplies of energy resources to India. The announcement came as the two leaders met in New Delhi and asserted their bilateral ties were “resistant to external pressure.”

A Statement Aimed at the United States

Putin's comments, made on Friday, appeared to be targeted at western countries, which have tried to urge New Delhi into scaling back its historical ties with Moscow. The backdrop follows previous US actions, notably the imposition of trade penalties targeting New Delhi over its purchase of Russian oil.

“Russia is a reliable supplier of oil and gas and all needed for the advancement of India’s industry,” the Russian president remarked. “Russia is prepared to persist in securing the consistent delivery of energy for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, though he did not referencing crude directly, reinforced the focus by stating that “a stable energy base has been a robust and important pillar of the bilateral partnership.”

Questioning Washington's Stance

Before the meeting, in a television interview, Putin had criticized American pressure on India's dealings with Russia. Putin stated, “If the US has the right to buy our nuclear fuel, how can you deny India claim the identical right?”

The visit was his initial visit to India after the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, and both sides made a visible attempt to display that the personal rapport between the men was undisturbed.

A Warm Reception

In a rare gesture, the Indian PM met Putin upon his arrival. The two shared a warm hug as old friends before having a one-on-one meal together.

Modi in his statement called India's partnership with Russia as “a beacon” and added it was “built on mutual respect and deep trust.”

Expanding Strategic Partnerships

The meeting yielded several significant pacts regarding military and economic cooperation. A major outcome was the signing of an economic cooperation programme aimed at 2030, which aims to increase twofold bilateral trade to one hundred billion dollars annually by the 2030 deadline.

Additionally vowed to reshape their military partnership. While Russia continues to be India's largest source of arms, this role has diminished in recent years as India works to broaden its supply base.

The official release emphasized cooperation in the co-development of cutting-edge military systems, though explicit mention of deals for the Sukhoi Su-57 were left out.

Ultimately, both nations reiterated that during the “current complex, tense, and volatile international environment, the Indo-Russian partnership remain strong to foreign influence.”
