New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that became a focal point in his campaign.
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central platform, was not quick to announce he would live there promptly following his victory in November.
"The choice rested on our family's safety and the imperative to focusing my complete efforts on implementing the platform on affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its abundance of cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will always live inside me and the work I do," he added.
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.
Adorned in cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The compound, which is said to has several bedrooms, also has fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
City residents consider these apartments crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
