New Year's Celebrants Advised to Wrap Up Warm with Snow Forecast Across the UK

Forecasters have indicated an icy commencement to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Revelers have been told to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Plans Continue Despite Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are set to proceed, following last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," stated the national forecaster.

Displays Under Clear but Frosty Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Temperatures are expected to be low, meaning warm wraps vital, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are in place for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Expected to Fall Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Advisories Activated

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this indicated the weather was expected to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
