Madeleine McCann brother and sister, Sean and Amelie, have testified in court that their interactions with an accused harasser were extremely upsetting and unsettling. The siblings described feeling stressed and scared by a woman who insisted she was their long-lost sister.
Appearing remotely, Amelie described how the accused, Julia Wandelt, contacted her repeatedly through online platforms and letters. She said the relentlessness was quite frightening because it's impossible to predict what her next move might be.
Messages from the defendant were presented in the trial, in which she recounted memories of being in the McCann household that she claimed were recalled during hypnotherapy. She testified, It’s quite disturbing that she's inventing these alleged recollections, even though she’s not Madeleine.
Jurors learned that the accused had produced pictures of Amelie and herself as children, which the state said were made with ChatGPT. A number of these images were sent through social media, while others were printed and enclosed in a mail to her.
Amelie stated, It was unpleasant, it caused me to feel very uncomfortable. It was evident she edited the images to make me appear similar to her, which was quite distressing. I knew I didn’t look like that, I understood it had been changed.
She also spoke about the effect of the supposed stalking on her parent, Kate, who testified about being approached at her residence by the defendant and her alleged accomplice, Karen Spragg.
I think my mum experienced it as the hardest. My mother was targeted by Julia to a greater extent than the rest of us and I think it certainly had a negative effect on her and her wellbeing, Amelie testified. It’s upsetting when a person is begging you to believe them and manipulating your emotions, to the extent you are questioning yourself.
In a testimony presented to the court, her brother stated that for him, he had not been severely affected by Wandelt's alleged stalking. But he had been distressed that she was drawing social media scrutiny, with people saying hurtful and unjust things about his parents.
If Wandelt was not mentally ill and was fully aware she is not Madeleine, yet continues to assert she is, that would be very distressing for me, he testified. I am convinced she is my sibling. The reality that the defendant is doing this has resulted in a great deal of anxiety and I consider it profoundly troubling.
The defendant and her co-defendant deny stalking the family household. The trial are ongoing.
