Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
