Hardline Former Congressman J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile Incoming Leader.

Following a conclusive second-round vote, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.

A Resounding Triumph

With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.

Agenda Centered On Security and Immigration

Recognized for his strong Catholic views and praise for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly built on promises to tackle increasing violence and drastically curb migration.

He repeatedly cited immigrants, particularly the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the election cycle, he delivered an ultimatum for them to depart before the new term begins or face deportation.

His plans featured controversial measures such as building detention centers, high walls, security fences, and strengthening the military presence on the northern border.

Amid a Regional Trend

Several observers view Kast's victory as aligning with a wider rightward wave in South America, similar to recent political outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other experts further frame it as a extension of the established rotation of power between left-wing and right-wing administrations since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.

Governing Without a Clear Majority

In spite of his sweeping popular vote victory, Kast is not expected to have an absolute majority in parliament, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even if various conservative parties are grouped together.

This legislative reality could complicate his policy goals, including a promise to reduce public spending by billions within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not offered a clear explanation.

"There are several things about what a Kast government will look like that are uncertain because he has not detailed the way he will do them," commented a political science analyst.

The expert added, "On economic policy, it is almost certain we will see spending cuts associated with the right. But the area with considerably less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse across the campaign."
