A charity drive is aiming to propel a traditional song from Palestine to the Christmas number one spot. The effort aims to send support to communities in Gaza while also highlighting Palestinian artistic heritage.
Renowned figure Brian Eno, who contributes to the track, stated that the release called 'Lullaby' represents a moment to stand with Palestinians over the Christmas period. He acknowledged the potential for an unexpected chart success.
“It would be fantastic if that came to pass, yes,” he commented. “I won't be completely disappointed if it doesn’t, festive releases are a unique phenomenon.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who features in the reimagining of a cultural piece called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the piece's powerful central theme.
“It occupies a very special place for countless listeners,” Barghouti explained. “The essence is that I would choose to perish with honor than live a life without freedom. That is the core idea of the song; we seek to lead a life of dignity that we are entitled to as Palestinians.”
The song was recorded in the wake of a solidarity show held in late summer. First conceived to be performed and recorded live, the rendition was omitted from the lengthy event due to scheduling overruns.
The notable list of performers featured on Lullaby includes a selection of well-known figures from the industry. All participated in the September show, which successfully generated a considerable total for humanitarian aid.
Lullaby was brought to life by a trio of music creators. The track showcases a fusion of the original Arabic with freshly written English words.
The team running the campaign have emphasized that their aim is to raise as much as possible for a dedicated fund. These proceeds will be allocated to Palestinian causes through an partnering humanitarian organization.
“There is no a rigid aim,” a figure commented. “We will pursue the maximum achievable. Obviously, the greater the amount, the better. All proceeds are directed out to the people of Gaza.”
The context in the territory was described as its extreme devastation, with a vast majority of infrastructure said to be in ruins or severely impacted.
“Given that reality, a few million is unlikely to make that much difference. But I think what does make a difference is first of all making this cause better known and demonstrating that another narrative exists.”
The track is scheduled for release on Friday. Additionally, a complete film of the benefit event will be made ready to watch on a digital service from the 19th of December.
