An Story of Surprising Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Floor

During 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I assumed I would book accommodation when I arrived, yet when I arrived, a large conference was taking place and every single budget hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I considered perhaps I could just sleep at the terminal – but quickly found that airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes around the clock. Unsure of what my next move should be and growing worried, I hopped on public transport and began walking near the casino, believing I could pass the night somewhere operating all night. Admittedly, this plan at my peak to succeed at an interview the next day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

Our society requires more individuals who show such kindness.

It seems I seemed lost because a female student spotted me walking aimlessly through the city and wondered if I was OK. I recounted my situation and without hesitation she suggested I could crash on the ground in her student dorm at the Australian National University – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where my interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided me some free dinner: one stuffed baguettes she brought back her part-time job. This gave me a hot shower and a protected spot and safe to spend the night.

Looking back, I now understand the significant risk she took as a woman letting a male stranger she’d just met crash at her place. In those days I was in a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I am astonished she did that – and remain very grateful.

I didn’t end up go to the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of kindness. My sincere desire is that life has repaid her act of kindness tenfold. Our society requires more folks like that woman.
