Afghan Rulers Utilized Discarded British Equipment to Find Afghans Who Worked Alongside Allied Troops, Inquiry Is Told

A whistleblower has disclosed a parliamentary probe that British authorities failed to secure classified devices allowing the militant group to locate Afghans who worked with western forces.

Information Leak Puts Numerous at Risk

The whistleblower, identified as Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the information breach were instructed to move homes and change their phone numbers to ensure their safety from militant forces.

MPs are looking into official response of a catastrophic disclosure of private information affecting almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had requested to relocate to Britain to avoid the Taliban.

Data Disclosure Was Discovered

A data file containing their personal data, comprising identities, contact details and occasionally household data, was inadvertently disclosed by an official employed at special operations center in last year.

The incident became known only in August 2023, when identities of nine people who had sought to relocate to the UK appeared on online platforms.

“There seems to be a false assumption that Afghan rulers are without the same sort of facilities that allied forces use,” she told lawmakers.

Early investigations provided to the investigation estimated that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and associates of people concerned by the breach had been executed.

A gag order about the incident was enacted in late 2023 and restricted relevant facts regarding the matter from media reporting until recently.

Due to legal constraints, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she was working with told affected households they were supporting that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been compromised”.

“We advised that they change residence when possible and switched their contact details. Those were the two main details that, should militant forces had access to these details, would cause them being traced,” the source testified.

Disputed Conclusions

Person A argued that government assessment performed by a former official had been wrong to determine that the acquisition of the information by the Taliban was “unlikely to substantially change present danger”.

“The important fact is that these individuals are not standing up to the Taliban; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to their previous employment.”

Person A described disturbing treatment experienced by at-risk Afghans, including electric shock torture, waterboarding, and severe beatings.

“Instances include four-year-old children who have had their arms broken to try to get households to disclose hiding places,” Person A stated.
