Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family go about their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
